2011 in Review

As I’ve been reading your blogs first post for the new year, many of you have chosen a word of the year that represents what you want to work toward over the next year. And this year is a leap year so have another day! I chose the single word embrace.

I am going to try to do my best to embrace the year’s changes in my health, my art, and my marriage. My health is always a daily change due an autoimmune disease…some days mean more meds than others. Keeping track of the changes make me feel very old. My art has been the same for the past few years, really nothing new. So this year I am going to take a few on-line art workshops. More on those events throughout the year. My marriage…I really need to learn to cook, learn some patience on events not planned…well, and just learn some new things for me to help our marriage.

Last year was a horrible year for me. Stress is a normal word for everyday life for us. My health plays a big part of the stress. Don has been so supportive during the rough times…while still working his profession. I did not post much about my health since most bloggers want and/or expect a “happy place”. But I feel that I need to post something that is a real life issue for me. In August, I was in the hospital ICU due to a bi-lateral embolism. I was told “you missed a bullet”. Sadly during this time, we lost Sadie. Still the doctors cannot tell us what caused the blood clots…just frustrating. So now I see the doctor weekly and take more meds. It makes me feel old to see so many meds in an organizer!

I am hoping that in 2012 I can embrace the changes that life offers. I hope you will continue to visit my blog this year as I hope to post some events and changes in my life’s journey and my art.

I can't thank you enough for joining me on this journey!

Getting ready for holidays is always so much fun!

I am working on a few holiday swaps this week.

I will post some peeks for you later in the week.

Here is a favorite recipe of mine for holiday gatherings.

Chewy Chocolate Cookies Recipe

4 ounces chopped bittersweet chocolate, melted
1 tablespoon instant espresso powder or instant coffee granules
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup Dutch-process cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
8 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
4 ounces coarsely chopped bittersweet chocolate

Preheat oven to 350F degrees. Line baking sheets with parchment paper of silicone liners.
Melt 4 ounces of the chopped chocolate in the microwave or on the stove top (whichever you prefer). When the chocolate is smooth, stir in espresso powder or instant coffee. Set aside to rest while you prepare the remaining ingredients.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt and set it aside while you mix the wet ingredients.
In a large mixing bowl, beat together the butter and sugar with an electric mixer on medium speed until creamy.
Beat in the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
Mix in the vanilla.
Beat in the melted chocolate and espresso mixture. Stop and scrape down the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula if necessary to make sure all your ingredients are well blended.
Add the flour mixture just until combined.
Gently stir in the coarsely chopped chocolate, being careful not to over mix.
Scoop dough by two-tablespoon amounts onto lined baking sheets, spacing the scoops of dough at least 2 inches apart. (I like to do this with a small ice cream scoop.) Bake until the edges of the cookies are just dry, about 13 to 15 minutes.
Remove from the oven and carefully transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.

This recipe should yield about 2 dozen Chewy Chocolate Cookies

I really miss sewing.

This is a photo from

my first craft show

Just some thoughts lately:

It is so easy for illness to cut the confidence,

attack our personality, and end relationships.

Each day I keep thinking ~ saying to myself,

“I can accept this illness without

allowing it to define me.”

Since August, my life has

really changed. I do not take

a day for granted!

because of the severe breathlessness

I get, I am limited to my

activities I love dearly.

I don't blog much about

my problems...just

wanted to say what's on

my mind. My posts have

been few lately due to

health issues. So I have

decided to continue my

blog and share my

little creations and vintage

finds with you dear friends.

Blogging has allowed me

to meet so many wonderful

people, and share in swaps

during the year.

Most importantly,

I am so thankful and blessed

for my wonderful husband Don,

and close family members.

Don and I were scheduled to go on vacation

in August. But due to my unexpected

hospital stay it was postponed to October.

Thought I would share our sunrises

with you today.

We went to Bellingrath Gardens for

a tour of the gardens and home.

There were still some roses

in bloom, but they were preparing

for the fall gardens.

This is the view from the condo

where we stay during our

trips down to Orange Beach, AL.

I am hoping to get some items listed in my

Etsy shop this week. These should be

some vintage items. Speaking of

vintage items...I will post some vintage

goodies I found on this trip later

in the week.

Sorry I have been missing in action from

my blog. I was in the hospital again.

Illness can take a toll on you both

physically and mentally. Especially

when there are so many unanswered

questions. Thankfully Don was

there to help in my questions.

I am hoping to finish some projects

for a swap I am participating with

a fall theme. Needless to say I am

a little late in getting out my package.

I really dislike being late for a

deadline.

I will try to catch up on visiting

blogs this week or next. So please

accept my apology for not being

able to visit. Blog land has

offered so many wonderful

Rainy Mondays...

Hope your weekend was a great one.

The weather is starting to get cooler
in the evenings and early mornings.

Today was a rainy Monday.

In between do laundry, I played with some

vintage images using Photo Shop.

Unfortunately the house breaking

is not going so well with new one!

I really dislike the term house

breaking for training pets.

But today there was some success.

The training papers were used for

the first time. I really have had

a hard time getting her to

learn those papers for not

for play. But it is kind of

funny to see this 2' x 2' paper

go running across the room.

Here is Chelsea and Gracie laying on my papers

next the desk. I was working on some new Excel

files this morning.

My visit with my sister Carol was wonderful.

We had a great time shopping!

Yes, I did let her relax some while

visiting. She read three books.

Vintage finds and an introduction...

our new addition ~~

introducing Ms. Gracie Hope!

She is now 10 weeks, 4.6 lbs.

She isn't going to replace our Sadie...

but we just love our Bostons. She

is already showing her personality.

Though the house training is not

going too well...she doesn't like the

grass too much. But I have been

blessed with patience!

It seems that I can only take

a good photo of her sleeping.

Now on to the my vintage finds.

When on vacation in May, we stopped

at a little shop in Fairhope, AL.

I got all of these salt & pepper shakers

for $15.00. I think a got a great

deal on the lot!

Here are some vintage French books

I found while on vacation.

I purchased these vintage Christmas

greeting cards from eBay last month.

Here are some cabinet cards I purchased

while on vacation. I thought it was a great

lot...paid $10.00.

Last week I went out to run some errands and stopped

by an antique mall close to home. I purchased this

pink rose platter for $5.00. The 2 rolls of vintage lace

were $7.00. I love the details of this lace!

Summer Heat

We have been under a heat advisory for several days.

Don and I went to the movies yesterday.

We haven't been to the movie theatre

in 8 years! The movie ~ Bad Teacher.

It was OK, slow start.

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!

We worked in the yard and screen patio this weekend.

Had some problems with snakes in the backyard due
to all of the rain the past few weeks.

Unfortunately the Bostons think the snakes are
toys! We put some lime/mothballs around the
fence. Our pest guy told us about a product that
works to keep the snakes out of the yard.

I found some vintage summer images from

2009 I cleaned using Photo Shop.

I also worked on some tags for the Bird Song swap.

I hope to work on these lovelies this week.

It has been a while since I have posted on my blog. I will be taking an extended time off to take care of some personal issues.

Living with an autoimmune disease can cause many different symptoms in your daily life. It can take on a different symptom every day. So planning your days can be a challenge to say the least.

On a recent get away with my husband, I was thrown another reality check about my physical limits. As a result the impact of living with this kind of illness, depression and anxiety creeps into your daily life. The things you love to do…travel, art, social events, exercise…are not part of your daily life any longer. I have kept to myself the pain these changes have caused me. Not to mention the loneliness.

Thank you for visiting my blog and leaving such kind words. I have met so many wonderful friends through blogging.

I am closing this post with some of my past creations.

What does your Easter outfit look like this year?

If you have been a follower of my blog, you know

that I love vintage postcards and photos.

My favorite images are from the Edwardian period.

Here are some vintage postcards that I found on a CD

that I purchased several years ago.

I want to apologize for not having any creative items

to show you lately on my blog. I just haven't

had the energy to create the past couple of

weeks. Most of my spare time has been

sleeping. I know this isn't really a good

excuse for not creating...but I have this

problem that once I start something,

I just have to finish it. So I have been

avoiding my art room.

I have been reading your blogs. Thank you for

Beautiful Day

It was a beautiful day here for us. Temperature was 88 degrees.

Don and I went out this morning to purchase some plants

for the front door and the screen patio.

It was so crowded...everyone had the same plans for the morning.

I will share some photos with you next week.

This week I scanned several of my Edwardian

postcards to share with you.

I really love the Edwardian era fashions for the hats

and dresses of the period.

Most were beautiful but there were some that

were just awful.

Look at my mail surprise!

Deb ~ Garage Sale Gal ~ and I have several swap exchanges during the year. This is my Easter swap goodies. Aren't they just a cutest? Deb also sent me some chocolate covered pretzels,

my favorite.

But I have eaten those goodies.

We had horrible weather here yesterday.

The three dogs and me were our center

closet for about an hour during the storms.

Surprisingly the dogs seem to know the routine

and go right in the closet with me.

Today the sun is shining!

She has matured beautifully!

She is - in my opinion- one of the greatest actresses

that the world has known.

Most nights I can't sleep, so I search the Internet on stories or photos of interest...movies, fashion, and art.

52 years ago today the world first met Barbie

Fifty-two years ago on March 9th Barbie made her official debut at the American International Toy Show in New York.

The brainchild of Ruth Handler, Barbie was named after her daughter (Barbara), who one of Ruth's main inspirations behind creating the Barbie doll in the first place. Ruth noticed that when Barbara was playing with her paper dolls, the young girl often gave them adult rolls. This struck a chord with Ruth who realized that most dolls at the time were created to look like babies and young children. Sensing a genuine need in the toy market for a more mature looking doll, Ruth put the idea for just such a toy forward to her husband (Elliot Handler), who was the co-founder of Mattel. It took several years to start production of the great icon ~ fashion doll.

I scanned a few images this week from my vintage Easter and St. Patrick's Day postcard collections. I did not retouch any of the postcards scanned this week.

For this collage I used vintage laces, buttons and a cabinet card embellished with vintage rhinestones/pearls and a millinery flower.

How many days until Spring?

According to my sidebar calendar, it is 39 days until Spring.

I found some of my vintage cabinet cards I scanned a couple of years ago.

I thought these would help with your Spring thoughts.

This photo image was tinted using Photo Shop.

We had more snow here today...causing a lot of problems on the roadways for the drivers.

This area does not see this much snow, but again this has been an unusal winter for all areas.

Please stay safe while driving this week!

Not much going on in the studio this week.

I am still recovering from pneumonia and a second round of meds.

Vintage Valentine

The past couple of weeks I have made some vintage Valentine art and gift tags for some blogging friends and family.

I thought I would share with you some of the finished gifts.

This is a collage a made for a new blogging friend. I used a original vintage Valentine for this collage, and added a vintage button embellished with vintage lace.

Here are some of the handmade gift tags. I used copies of vintage Valentine cards and vintage photo images for these gift tags. I embellished the tags with new papers, vitnage lace, vintage buttons, rhinestones, paper flowers, and ribbons.

A Winter Swap Peek

I have been ill this past week and found out yesterday that I have pneumonia.

It started off with a cough...that just got worst.

So needless to say I am on some strong medications for now.
